Between 11-13 June 2025, University of the Highlands and Islands Renaissance and Early Modern Research Alliance (REMRA) hosted its first online conference! Joined by over 80 participants, featuring speakers from across Europe, the conference was a huge success.
Structured around REMRA’s key research areas – the North Atlantic and Baltic regions, early modern warfare, communities and identities, and public history – the conference provided an astounding array of multi-disciplinary research papers from academics, postgraduate research students and professionals.
Foremost amongst the contributions were the four keynote papers given by Professor Mark Gardiner (University of Lincoln and LIFTE), Professor Steve Murdoch (Swedish Defence University and Visiting Professor at INS), Professor Mark Elliot (HTC, UHI) and Dr Simon Burton (University of Edinburgh), and Dr Lucy Dean (Centre for History, UHI).
On the final day of the conference, the keynotes were joined by Dr Kathrin Zickermann (UHI Centre for History) and Professor David Worthington (UHI Acting Dean) for a superb roundtable discussion about the future of early modern studies, followed by Dr Andrew Lind’s (UHI INS) presentation of the new Early Modern European Studies (EMES) MLitt.
The conference organisers – Dr Kathrin Zickermann, Dr Andrew Lind, Dr Jen Harland (Archaeology Institute, UHI) and Professor Mark Elliot – would like to thank all speakers, chairs and participants for their enthusiasm and engagement. The event clearly displayed the breadth and depth of early modern research at UHI and the collaborative potential which promises much for the future.
The EMES session, roundtable and all of the keynotes were recorded and are now available on the INS YouTube channel or click below for each individual recording. For the conference’s full programme, visit the REMRA webpage.
If you are a student or member of staff at UHI and you would like to join REMRA, please contact Dr Kathrin Zickermann (kathrin.zickermann@uhi.ac.uk).
