Session Outline

UHI's Sustainability Strategy includes the target to embed Learning for Sustainability into all taught courses by 2027 at the latest. For some staff teaching on programmes outside of the environmental sciences, it may not be immediately obvious how to do this. However, sustainability is a broad concept and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) offers a framework for everyone to find connections between their area of interest and sustainability. A few years ago I signed onto a challenge, led by students, to teach them the sustainable development goals. It was an inspiring experience for me and student feedback was tremendously positive, so now I do it every year. If I, as a creative arts teacher, can find ways to link sustainability to everything we do, anyone can! This presentation will show how I have embedded sustainability in modules I have taught in creative writing, literature, English and communications, from level 5 to level 11.

Presenter

Mandy Haggith

Mandy Haggith teaches creative writing, writes poetry, novels and non-fiction and does poetic inquiry research. Her PhD was originally in Artificial Intelligence, back when that was a newfangled thing. She then spent two decades trying, and failing, to save the world's forests whilst learning to write creatively. She has lived in Assynt, in the northwest Highlands, since 1999 and joined UHI in 2018. Her latest book is The Lost Elms.
